Have you ever noticed problems with someone's volume of speech? Have you spoken to someone who spoke very quietly or too loudly? The volume of their speech was too much or too little. In the course, Ace Your Interview, I talk about matching your interviewer's communication style. This is very important in order to build rapport.
Volume Problems
Too quiet
Too loud
The volume of speech can be too quiet. What is the problem with that? This can be a problem when it presents that we are not capable or not confident. We can confuse soft-spokenness with weakness. The two are not the same. We always want people to know that we are able to do the job that we are seeking.
The loudness of a voice can be over bearing. You may think that will present confidence, but it may backfire. It may give the impression of arrogant or bully. There is a great example of this in the video, Interview Do's and Don'ts. The quiet speaker came across with little confidence. Neither of which is good. The best impression to leave is that you are a great candidate for employment.
The Solution
The solution to either of these problems is first, to become self aware. You may not know of any loudness issues. That is where a speech coach is helpful. A trained ear that can discern is a great help. Simple exercises and breath support can increase loudness for the quiet speaker. For the speaker who is too loud, learning to decrease volume is fairly simple.
Most importantly, the goal is be an effective communicator. It is a road that goes both ways. You must hear and you must be heard for this to happen. The loud and over bearing speaker may need to work on knowing his audience and listening. The quiet, soft spoken speaker may need to work on being heard and speaking up.
