One of the biggest questions as you enter into the world of guitar pedals has to do with how to set up your pedalboard. What is the best order of pedals, and why. Of course, when asking this question a lot of people will give the snarky answer of, "whatever sounds best to you". This does have some truth to it, but there are also some general guidelines that will help you get started. Once you have figured out these guidelines don't fell like you are locked in to this way of doing things. Try to change everything up and have fun experimenting!
This video happens to feature my personal board, and I will walk you through why I decided to put each pedal in its specific place.
This first pedal I like to have in my chain is a Compressor. Right now I have the Walrus Audio Deep Six. Having some gentle compression at the beginning of the board sets up a nice foundation for everything else to be built on. I've noticed the extra sustain really comes out in my delays, and it adds some nice shine to my clean tones.
After the compressor I am going to the Octave Generating Micro POG. This pedal lives in the pitch-shifting family and is one of those that you should place according to your own personal preference. The three places I would suggest starting with would be in front of your drives, after your drives, or in an effects loop. I chose to put it before my drives, because I want to extra octaves to be overdriven rather than add octaves to a distorted tone.
Next I have my drive section. This can be as large or as small as you want depending on how much real estate you have to offer. I generally run my pedals in order from lowest gain to highest as I like to stack my drives, or run them at the same time. From here I go into my volume pedal. the volume pedal is another one that can live in multiple places, but you will probably want it before your time-based effects. I prefer mine after my drives because that way my swells do not affect the gain structure of my signal.
The last section of my board features my time based effects. The includes Vibrato, delay, and reverb. When you are setting up this section (or really any part of your board) think about your current tone, and how you want to change it. If you want that effect to be echoed then it is a good time to bring in your delay. Most likely you will want reverb to be the very last thing on your board, and delay to be second to last. Again there are no hard rules and you are welcome to set things up however sounds best to you.
