As soon as we hit the ground in a new European city, there’s just one question that needs answering – how do we enjoy this place like we grew up here? We tend to just take our cues from the locals, going where they go and enjoying the places they enjoy. And while this works out brilliantly for finding great spots for coffee and such, we’ve begun to notice something about our ‘living like locals’ policy. Locals aren’t tourists.
Think about it: when’s the last time you visited a museum in your home town? Historical point of interest? If you can’t remember, you’re not the only one. It seems that this cultural layer somehow gets pushed aside in the midst of everyday life. But it’s one we’re intent not to miss out on while exploring new places in Europe. It’s time to get touristing.
Travel To Europe: Sightseeing in Berlin
We know anything labeled ‘tourist’ tends to get mentally blacklisted, but before you let the idea scare you off completely, hear us out. Of course we’d love to think that we can fit in like locals everywhere we go, but we’ve learned that the historically rich cities of Europe make embracing one’s tourist-alter-ego not so hard after all. Berlin is definitely one of those cities.
The unbelievable chain of events that shaped Berlin’s history over the last hundred years is downright crazy. The city that exists today is a mere twenty five years removed from the chaos and complexity that divided Berlin since the end of World War 2 and the effects are still somewhat present. It’s a blessing that there’s so much great food and coffee to be had here, and we definitely recommend you carve out plenty of time for both. But rest assured that visiting the rich historical and cultural landmarks in Berlin is key to understanding what’s going on in present-day city.
Berlin Tourist Attractions
As with any other European capital city, places warranting large crowds of tourists are in no short supply. But this is Germany after all, and that means efficiency is a virtue and we’re not about to waste any time. Endless queues ain’t in the cards. We’ve gathered the best Berlin tourist attractions and made a curated list of only the sights truly worth seeing. To steep you fully in Berlin’s complicated and colorful history, our list includes stops from the very beginnings of Prussian-era monarchies like the Brandenburg Gate and the Berliner Dom, to more recent, soviet-influenced additions like the Berlin Wall and Fernsehturm.
