It never ceases to amaze us how rarely Berlin receives the credit it deserves. One would think that with all the fun things to do in Berlin, the German capital would be a much more frequent inclusion to European travellers’ itineraries. Sadly, that just isn’t so. Especially with regard to travellers of American origin, destinations like Paris, Rome and London seem to get all the preferential treatment. And considering how magical each of those cities is it’s really not hard to see why. Our aim is not to detract away from the merit of any other European city, we’re only trying to shine the spotlight on a certain place that we believe is totally deserving of you and every other traveller’s attention.

Fun Things to do in Berlin

Just like in any other country, there are massive regional differences across the nation of Germany. Differences in language, culture, food, you name it. What’s funny, though, is that there’s only one specific portion of German culture that outsiders seem to grab ahold of. Suffice it say that of the eighty million people residing in Germany, only a very small percentage have ever worn Lederhosen or attended Oktoberfest. Sorry to burst your bubble.

Now that we’ve gotten that cleared up, let’s get back to Berlin. As the capital of the country, Berlin is an ever increasingly international melting pot. There are many different cultures colliding in Berlin and most Germans will readily admit that Berlin is the least German city of any in the country. So while this may mean that Berlin might not satisfy your cravings for the uber clichés only found in Bavaria, it does mean that you will most likely be surprised in the best way with all the diversity and non-Germanicness to be found in this city.

Berlin Tourist Attractions

Brandenburg Gate

You’ll probably recognize this iconic landmark since it’s one of Germany’s most well-known symbols. The Brandenburg Gate makes for a great photo op while discovering the city’s sights.

Fernsehturm

Fernsehturm provides a great opportunity for you to see the entire city in panorama. Consequently you’ll be able to see the ball from all over the city as well.

Reichstag Building

It’s possible to visit the building that houses the German parliament, the crown of which is the glass cupola on the roof.

Berlin Wall

It’s hard to fully picture what life in the divided city was like, but seeing the remaining stretches of the Berlin Wall provide faint glimmers of the past.

Checkpoint Charlie

As residents of either side of Berlin, you would have used Checkpoint Charlie to access the opposite side. Visit the historic spot to see just what that experience would have looked like.

Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe

This outdoor memorial is very interactive. Visitors are able to walk through the labyrinthine grid of concrete blocks and there’s also an indoor exhibit down below.

Berlin Cathedral

Because of the damage brought by the second wold war, there really aren’t many originally old buildings in the city. The reconstructed Berliner Dom provides that opportunity.

Treptower Park

Teeming with Soviet propaganda, the memorial in Treptower Park commemorates the fallen of the Red Army during the Battle of Berlin.

East Side Gallery

What was once a length of the Berlin Wall keeping East Germans from getting anywhere near the Spree is now the world’s largest open-air art gallery.

Tempelhofer Feld

This decommissioned airfield now serves as a massive public park. Loads of Berlin locals utilize the space for recreation and relaxing when the weather is nice.
