Finding a suitable public place to work on the computer for a while isn’t as easy as one might think. Of course there are always places like Starbucks, but frankly we’re not into burnt coffee and chances are neither are you. It’s difficult, though. It’s not like cafés with reliable internet and craft coffee are advertising themselves as such. In our experience many cafes who do meet the criteria of a great internet cafe might even be opposed to that categorization for fear of amassing too many visitors who stare at their computer screens and don’t talk to their neighbors, thus putting a damper on the kind of atmosphere they may be trying to foster in their space. This means that finding great internet cafes that also serve quality coffee can sometimes be a bit of a trial and error situation. For those of you who have experienced much trial (and an equal amount of error) on this front already, we’ve got something special for you all. We took it upon ourselves to find the best work-friendly cafes in Berlin.
Best Internet Cafes in Berlin
Berlin is full of freelancing creatives, entrepreneurs and digital nomads who are constantly in need of inspiring places to get work done. No matter how well you’ve decorated your apartment, it’s gospel truth that everyone’s got to get out of the house sometime. Many of our friends find it hard to be motivated at home and opt instead for an escape every now and then. The place of choice for most is a nice, work-friendly café. In our experience, however, we’ve oftentimes come to the extremely inconvenient conclusion that not all cafés are created equal. Some in fact, aren’t work-friendly at all. Anyone who’s missed out on a few hours worth of work repeatedly attempting to connect to shoddy wifi can attest to that. No thanks. The undeniable criteria for a good remote working location is a wifi signal with strength matched only by the café staff’s intricate knowledge of single-origin coffee, and of course a steady supply of both. In our book, a pleasant atmosphere, things to snack on, and great interior design also go a long way.
The best thing about Berlin is the diverse mix of people who call it home. There are loads of Macbook-wielding individuals looking for a comfortable place to set up shop, but thankfully not all the creative minds in the city design websites, edit photos or engage in some other line of work which requires constant use of a computer (all fully worthwhile endeavours, mind you). Some blessed few have made it their mission to open up incredible cafés where the rest of us can hang out, drink great coffee and maybe potentially make some headway on that overdue edit. Yes, we’re among the computer kids and we’ll be the first to salute those who enable our nonconventional work habits.
Remote Work Locations in Berlin
As we already covered in our Berlin Third Wave Coffee Guide, there are lots of great options for craft coffee being brewed around the city. Berlin’s third wave scene has grown leaps and bounds over the last few years and continues to solidify as one of the most exciting up-and-coming coffee communities in Europe. And while many of the cafés here would be viable options to facilitate you working through some emails, this list is not a who’s who of craft coffee in Berlin. We’ve compiled a list that focuses more on remote work locations in Berlin that are geared toward promoting prolonged sessions of productivity in addition to serving nice hot beverages. These are the institutions we wholeheartedly trust to host Berlin’s remote working crowd. And we’ll put our money where our mouth is – you’re guaranteed to find us at one or more of these cafés several times a week.
Best Work-Friendly Cafes in Berlin
Even within the realm of great internet cafes in Berlin, there are a select few which satisfy a uniquely trinitarian set of criteria. You’ll notice that some of the spots in this list also show up on our best coffee in Berlin list. Well, as if that weren’t enough there are yet some who qualify for our best brunch in Berlin list as well. Does that mean what I think it means? Yes, folks, it does. There are places in existence (in Berlin!) where one can indulge in third wave coffee, take care of some work-related things AND get an incredible breakfast. This would constitute what we call the trifecta, the holy trinity of any cafe’s work-friendliness.
Some prime examples of this phenomenon occurring right here in Berlin are Distrikt Coffee and The Store, two choice Mitte establishments unique in their own ways and seemingly perfect in every way. It’s doubtful that either would feel super jazzed about being labeled an internet cafe, and that’s not what we intend to do because we agree that they aren’t. It’s just that they both tick all the boxes when it comes to the perfect remote working conditions. Delicious coffee, chef prepared cuisine, a lots of bandwidth – the recipe for success. Plus, neither mind the regular influx of visitors with laptops in tow.
Ok, We’ve teased it long enough. You were promised a list of all the best internet cafes in Berlin and you’ve been very patient to have read this far. Go ahead.
