In our experience many cafes who do meet the criteria of a great internet cafe might even be opposed to that categorization for fear of amassing too many visitors who stare at their computer screens and don’t talk to their neighbors, thus putting a damper on the kind of atmosphere they may be trying to foster in their space. This means that finding great internet cafes that also serve quality coffee can sometimes be a bit of a trial and error situation. In our experience, however, we’ve oftentimes come to the extremely inconvenient conclusion that not all cafés are created equal. Some in fact, aren’t work-friendly at all. Anyone who’s missed out on a few hours worth of work repeatedly attempting to connect to shoddy wifi can attest to that. No thanks. The undeniable criteria for a good remote working location is a wifi signal with strength matched only by the café staff’s intricate knowledge of single-origin coffee, and of course a steady supply of both. In our book, a pleasant atmosphere, things to snack on, and great interior design also go a long way.

The best thing about Berlin is the diverse mix of people who call it home. There are loads of Macbook-wielding individuals looking for a comfortable place to set up shop, but thankfully not all the creative minds in the city design websites, edit photos or engage in some other line of work which requires constant use of a computer (all fully worthwhile endeavours, mind you). Some blessed few have made it their mission to open up incredible cafés where the rest of us can hang out, drink great coffee and maybe potentially make some headway on that overdue edit. Even within the realm of great internet cafes in Berlin, there are a select few which satisfy a uniquely trinitarian set of criteria. Some prime examples of this phenomenon occurring right here in Berlin are Distrikt Coffee and The Store, two choice Mitte establishments unique in their own ways and seemingly perfect in every way. It’s doubtful that either would feel super jazzed about being labeled an internet cafe, and that’s not what we intend to do because we agree that they aren’t. It’s just that they both tick all the boxes when it comes to the perfect remote working conditions. Delicious coffee, chef prepared cuisine, a lots of bandwidth – the recipe for success.
