When most people are planning their European excursions, Berlin doesn’t get included in the itinerary nearly often enough. Somehow losing out to more mainstream destinations like Paris or London, Berlin deserves way more credit than it’s typically given. Brandenburg Gate
One of the most easily-recognized landmarks in Germany, the Brandenburg Gate attracts tourists almost every day of the year. Brandenburg Gate served as the backdrop for many pivotal moments in Berlin’s history which you’ll find evidenced by countless photographs.
Fernsehturm
Built by the DDR during the cold war, the TV Tower in central Berlin was meant to subtly remind the city’s eastern and western residents that someone was watching, always watching. Now the massive structure provides an opportunity to see the entire city in panorama from way up in the air. After a bit of exploring it’s cool to head up and get a birds-eye view of everywhere you’ve already been.
Reichstag Building
The building that houses the German parliament, the Reichstag is open to visitors year round. While the structure has been around since the beginning of the Weimar Republic, the glass dome on the roof was only added in recent years. Ascending to the top makes for a nice view of Berlin’s governmental district.
Berlin Wall
The infamous wall that divided the city into east and west can still be seen today. Most of the wall was demolished after the fall of the Soviet Union, but the remaining stretches in Mitte make for a sobering reminder of the conflict between east and west.
Checkpoint Charlie
The most famous of the checkpoints in place during the cold war, Checkpoint Charlie still attracts droves of people every single day.
Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe
This chilling memorial features a grid of cold concrete slabs that somehow embody the unspeakable atrocities of the Nazi Holocaust. The underground exhibition is also a fascinating and emotional journey into the darkness of Nazi Germany.
Berlin Cathedral
Berlin Cathedral is a beautiful edifice on Museum Island. This little stretch of land surrounded by the Spree river is home to many such buildings, but the Berlin Cathedral is a must see.
Treptower Park
Treptower Park is a fascinating place devoted to the fallen Soviet soldiers who gave their lives freeing Berlin from the evils of Fascism. The place reeks of Soviet propaganda and is a true sight to behold.
East Side Gallery
One of the few remaining pieces of the Berlin Wall, the East Side Gallery is now the largest open-air collection of visual artwork. The stretch along the Spree is especially nice in summer.
Tempelhofer Feld
Once Berlin’s major airport, Tempelhofer Feld now serves as a massive recreation area where huge crowds of locals enjoy grilling, biking, and flying kites.
