If you are looking for quotes about success, check out this video. Success is a result of many things, including wisdom, and the search for happiness. Happiness and success are usually thought of as results of one another, but the key to success might be different than you think.
Christianity is different than all the religions in the world in the sense that it doesn't say desire is bad, or wanting, or longing is bad, but what Christianity calls us to examine again and again is the object of our desires. What we long for that God's not repressive, God says, you settle for something far less than what I have intended and designed for you.
And becoming a Christian is essentially saying, God, I see you as the most beautiful option of all the options of gods in the world of things I can worship and put on the throne of my heart. Becoming a Christian is essentially saying God I want you to be the one that sits here ultimately, I want to begin to have you on the throne of my heart.
And I will struggle with this over and over again, the two paths will always pull me, and I will always want to put my heart and attach it to something I shouldn't, but God, I want to continually remind myself to put you as the ultimate thing in my life, not just a good thing. One of the things I notice as a dad, is that often times if this whole thing's clear as mud for you, let me try to explain it this way, as a dad, I have a little boy, his name is Dane, he is three years old, you've heard me talk about Dane many times if you come here regularly, and Dane,
One of our favorite things to do is to sit in the backyard at the house and I have a grill in the backyard, and we sit in the backyard, and I like to smoke things back there, meat, just to clarify, what can kind of a church is this man? And Dane, we'll sit in the backyard and he likes the grill, I think he likes it because it makes this white smoke and he thinks it looks like a train and he just loves it.
But we'll sit in the backyard for hours, and there's a wiffle ball, we have a good time, we'll just sit back there, smoking meats and all kinds of, and a few months ago, we were having a celebration, it was a birthday or something and I said Dane, why don't we go to the store, I'm going to let you pick up what we eat tonight. And he was so excited, so we go to the grocery store and I let him pick out what we're going to have, and Dane has good taste and he decides that we're going to have Alaskan King Salmon, look at that! Ain't that beautiful? How big and wonderful, everything's bigger in where? (Texas)
Wrong, Costco. It was not a trick question really, thought I caught this in Lake Ray Costco, but he decided this is what we are going to have, and so we go in the backyard and we do the whole seeder play, the whole nine yards, we go crazy, and the moment comes to eat, we sit at the table and everybody is, my wife has made up this entire spread of food, just one of these family beautiful moments, and as we prepare to eat and cut the fish, Dane looks at me and he goes I don't want that.
What are you talking about you don't want, you picked it! He goes no I want a different fish. We're not going to the store, we're not going back, some of you are parents, you've been in this position, how do I reason with you right now? And I'm like well what do you want to eat? He goes I want a different fish, go get me a different fish.
I'm like buddy, this is the only fish we have, we eat at 11 O'clock if we keep playing this game, and so he goes in the pantry and he picks out a different fish, and he grabs his favorite Goldfish I'm not knocking Goldfish, I like gold fish as much as the next guy, they're delicious, but compared to Alaskan King salmon, who would choose this? And it's this moment, you are not my child right now, like what is going on? So, for dinner this is what he eats, he chooses the lesser thing and ignores the better thing. And in any area of our life where we find ourselves in rebellion to God, any area of life where we find ourselves rejecting something, that God's offered us. It really comes down to us clutching Goldfish and ignoring whatever it is that God has prepared or desires for us. In our culture, God has said, I want you to experience marriage ultimately that would be what God wants for you. He says, I want you to, not that if you are single you are an incomplete person, but He says, if you long to get married, I want you to experience that and a sacrificial relationship with somebody, and often times we choose pornography, just pictures, clutch the Goldfish. And say, I'll settle for this, and God says, why would you settle when you could have this?
God says, I have made you for friendship and community, where you can begin to experience the joy of being open, and honest, and confessing with one another, and often times, we settle for isolation. In any area of our life when we are rejecting God or sinning, it really comes down to clutching Goldfish and saying, I will settle for this. Where are the areas of life?
Where you find yourself on the path of the fool? It's because somewhere along the way, your heart decided to settle for Goldfish, and we end up ignoring the beautiful thing that God wants us to experience. I love the way Paul says that in Ephesians 4:28, he says this, he says, about this life with God that we're invited to live.
