Paving the road of memories
Last week I was traveling down 52 from Liberty, NY to downtown Newburg, NY. I couldn’t help but think about the dozens of sealcoating jobs we’ve done over the years on that stretch of road alone. We’ve resurfaced parking lots in liberty and poured new asphalt on roads in Loch Sheldrake. In Hurleyville we paved a driveway and in Ellenville we spent days resurfacing and sealcoating a parking lot. We’re up in Pine Bush all the time! It’s just a short drive for us and we love the working with the families and businesses up there.
How does sealcoating work?
Obviously, we all know that sealcoating looks great and saves your parking and driving surface. But what does seal-coat do – how does it work? Compared to historical methods (stone and dirt) asphalt protects the aggregates from absorbing water. But still asphalt has some weaknesses because it is a very complex mixture of thousands of chemicals that are susceptible to weather, salts, and chemicals that disintegrate the asphalt. The signs of this include chipping, cracking, and turning grey. Parking lots and driveways are particularly vulnerable to damage because the stationary nature of the cars. The oil based contact of the tires and the chemicals that drip and leak on the surface break it down. Sealcoating is like a rubber glove for the paved surface. Regularly coating the parking lot or driveway with sealcoat will protect it from damage.
