Kids - Wired for Worship - Part 1 of 5
This is the original manuscript that was used for my article in Children's Ministry Magazine, titled "Sing a New Song." This article describes how God has wired kids for worship, and how we can lead them into worship

This is part 1 of 5
We were in the studio, working on our
new Christmas album when my music assistant and I started rehearsing
my kids chorus. It’s my favorite time, working with my group of terrific 8 to 12 year-old studio singers. We were looking through lyrics for the first time while we listened to the music tracks. I watched as they concentrated; their lips moving, their brows furrowed and their toes and fingers dancing to “Deck the Hall,” the song they’d be recording later that day.
Suddenly, Erin, one of my 11 year-old girl singers, straightened up and pointed at her lyrics. “Wait!” she exclaimed, her face filled with surprise and confusion.
“ ‘See the blazing YULE before us?’ ” she demanded. “I always thought the words were, ‘See the blazing MULE before us!’ “
That stopped everything. We laughed until we wept, our noses ran, and our sides hurt. What a mental image! We made jokes about fire-roasting mules through the rest of production, adding precious minutes of recording studio time to the budget, but making memories for a lifetime.
Laying foundations for life
Everyone in the studio that morning still has all the laughter, snickering conversations, feelings of joy and friendship, and the physical sensations of that day attached to 8 simple notes from the first line of that song.
Isn’t it amazing how God has created us to recall more than just the words that are attached to songs? God has uniquely wired people, and especially kids, to be touched mind, soul & body by songs. Children tuck away the
concepts, feelings, and words of songs in their hearts and minds. I think that is why God exhorts us in Psalm 47: 6-7 (NET Bible):
Sing to God!
Sing!
Sing to our king! Sing!
For God is king of the whole earth!
Sing a well-written song!
