In the accompanying video, the pastor explains that joy is produced in a believer in Christ by the Holy Spirit who lives within that person. We can’t manufacture joy on our own.The Definition of Joy is not happiness – happiness is dependent on circumstances – joy is a “fruit of the Spirit” – God produces joy in us by His indwelling. When we acknowledge He is God and turn the lordship of our life over to Him, we can experience a peace, a joy, a relationship with the Father.
Joy of the Lord
Are you ajoyful person? Is God’s Spirit working in you? Allowing the joy of the Lord to fill us, and not be strangled by the weeds of sin, demands that we spend time reading God’s Word and talking with Him. Yes, just talking with God. Perhaps you like to talk aloud to Him when you are alone – perhaps you talk inaudibly to Him. Talking with God is prayer. When we are conversing with God, we will experience the joy of fellowship with Him as the Spirit begins to produce fruit in our lives.
Joyful relationships with others are dependent upon spending time with people in fellowship, Bible study and prayer. If you are not in a small group, we call them Life Groups in our church, try visiting one or more until you find a place where you feel comfortable. As you see others growing in their faith, you will come to know that living by faith is real, it is purposeful and it brings joy to our lives. Praying for one another, putting others needs above yours and rejoicing in answered prayer draws us together.
The pastor in the video clearly makes the point that joy is not to be manufactured by saying, “Hey, we’re going to be more joyful around here. OK? Put something happy on social media, etc. so people will know you are joyful.” No, that is not going to work. We must cooperate with God. His Spirit is the source of all joy. He says “I am the vine, you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will produce much fruit.” And Joy is one of the fruits He produces in the believer.
Definition of Joy
The Bible says that apart from Christ, you cannot be a joyful person – you can’t do anything. God tells us he wants to give of thisjoy– that he is the very source of joy – and He promises us He is going to give us joy unspeakablethat overflows. God gives us everything – He wants to give us this joy and it becomes our joy. God promises us so much will be given so that it will overflow into every relationship we have as we allow Him to work in us.
The cross reminds us to stay connected to Christ through prayer in order to be able to enjoy that abundant life that He has provided for those of us who believe. Keep the connection open by confessing sin in your life, by acknowledging who Jesus Christ is, and by recognizing Him as your source of life, all power and joy. Once we connect in a relationship with Him, that joy can overflow into others as we remember that He is the source of that joy. Then we can spread it wherever we go – because that gift is a product of God working in the life of a believer. May we connect, be filled, and spread that joy of the Lord thatwe have received, beginning right now.
