There is so much noise in the world. Everyone is so self absorbed, they are so busy and spend all their free time on the Internet or watching television. I often see a group of four people out to lunch all on their handheld devices and no one is speaking. I am afraid our children are going to lose the ability to freely engage in conversation. For some reason they are avoiding the vulnerability of intimate talks and choosing the safety of the depersonalized text.
Affect on Children
Current research shows children spend an average of 7.5 hrs a day on technology. It has been determined that this is contributing to decreased imagination and creativity, decreased sensory and motor development, poor self regulation and attention and increased child obesity. There has also been reported an increase in ADHD, autism, coordination disorders, developmental delays, unintelligible speech, learning difficulties, anxiety, depression and sleep disorders associated with overuse of technology. Four critical factors to achieve healthy child development are movement, touch, human connection, and exposure to nature. A child needs 2-3 hours of active play for normal development.

Benefits of technology are that we can meet people around the world, understand other cultures, maintain and strengthening family relationships and aid in progressing technology and sharing information to meet food requirements around the world. Negatives of technology include concerns that people are more distracted, overly stressed, increasingly isolated, engaging in empty shallow relationships, less physically active and developing Internet addictions.
As with all things the challenge is to find a balance. It is important to put technology free space back in your daily lives. Be intentional. Turn off your cell, television, computer, and radio. Learn to embrace the quiet. It is amazing what you will find when you learn to meditate and to relax, to fully appreciate the moment. You reconnect to a loving God and to the creative self. When you stop the flood of sensory input you can see the world in a different light. Venture out into the outdoors when enjoying a tech-free day. Your stress will be instantly replaced by peace as you listen to the birds, the wind rustle the leaves and the leaves crunch under the feet. AND MOST OF ALL, RECONNECT WITH FRIENDS AND FAMILY. Laugh together. Talk about dreams and encourage each other. We were meant to live in community so throw a dinner party and play games or gather around a campfire for songs or a story.
REMEMBER TO KEEP IT SIMPLE!
1. Unplug devices
2. Connect to people and nature
4. Embrace gratitude
5. Limit exposure to technology for your children
