Everyone who has a timeline should keep a swell preset saved
somewhere in their timeline. This is a great sound to have as a back up for
when you need a volume swell and you are with out a volume pedal. While a volume
pedal may be the best way to go if swells are a normal part of your style, but
not everyone has room on their board for these. The Strymon Timeline Swell does
a good job of recreating this effect and bringing some nice ambience to your set.
Another nice feature of this effect is that you can have just your delays swell
in and keep your attack. This creates a sort of blooming effect that can be
really cool.
The external controls on this setting are the same as
discussed in our Timeline overview. The key parameter to this delay machine is
the rise which can be found by pressing the value encoder. The Rise determines
how long the swell takes. You can choose from .10- 4 seconds. Strymon suggests
setting the rise time close to the delay time for a more natural swell. Within the parameters menu you can also set a
high pass filter and the smear. Remember the smear lightens the attack of your
subsequent repeats while maintaining the frequency response. With the swell
delay I tend to leave the smear turned up pretty high. This is because with
this setting I am looking for a more washy sound rather than a rhythmic delay. Not
that to achieve an actual swell you will need to turn the mix knob to 100
percent.
I don’t find myself using this delay machine that often, because
I have the Bloomery available on my board. I would still suggest using a volume
pedal because while this is a nice tool to have in your back pocket I prefer
the sound of some of the other delays. I prefer to swell into the dTape
setting, but again this comes down to a matter of preference.
Overall the swell delay is a nice feature and while I am
glad the team at Strymon included it, it is not the most important part of the
pedal for me. I don’t end up using it that often, but I have been thankful it
is there the few times I have needed it. Take sometime and create a preset for
this sound and save it in a bank you don’t use that often. That way it is there
is you need it, but not in the way.
