This is CourageCast. Faith, inspiration, and motivation for today.
Well, hey everyone. This is EricNordhoff and you're listening to another episode of Courage Cast. Today I'm in my car driving and I have something to share. Today I want to talk to briefly about being in a funk and not just how I got out of it, but what led to being in a funk. What that felt like for me, when it comes to business productivity. Just feeling like I'm getting things accomplished.
I, for the longest time, for like 2 weeks I've been putting off doing an email list. Putting an email list together with about 150 names in it. Yeah, I was given a document that was just a piece of paper and I needed to get this little email list put together for my church. I knew it was not top priority, but it's also something that's been hanging over my head, because it had a deadline related to it. It's part of one of the ways I volunteer at our church. For about 2 weeks I've been putting it off, procrastinating it. Every time I had an opportunity to do it, I didn't do anything I didn't work on it at all. Rather than doing what I just did today ... Actually, what I just chose to do yesterday, started doing yesterday and finally finished today. I was face with this task, that just seemed so daunting to take 150 names. First name, last name, and email address, and put it into a spreadsheet.
How to Stop Procrastination
Well, I finally said, "To heck with it. I'm just going to do it. I'm tired of seeing this on my to do list for 2 weeks and not doing anything about it." I started working on it yesterday. Do you know how much time it took me to enter 150 names into a spreadsheet? First name, last name, and email address. About 15 minutes of total time. I did it about 5 minute increments in between my work. I could not believe, once I got going, how quick it actually took me to enter all of those names. I thought to myself, why did I put this off? Why did I put myself through the mental strain of putting it off, procrastinating, and actually feeling a little bit bad about myself that I didn't get to it. Why didn't I just do it in the first place and stop whining about it? Over thinking this thing that I thought would take so much longer to get rid of and get done.
I thought about, how many other parts of my life do I procrastinate? How many other areas in my work? If I would just do it instead of thinking about it, hemming, and hawing, procrastinating. If I would just do it and get the emotions out. Take the emotions out of doing it. The whiny feeling of, oh, I don't really feel like doing this and just getting my feelings out. Ignoring the feelings and just getting about the business of doing what I know I need to do.
Now, should I get an assistant to do this kind of work for me? Yeah, probably. Could I be smarter in the way I work? Yeah, probably, but sometimes I over think things. I think things are going to take hours and hours of time. They actually only take just a few minutes of time, if I actually get about the business of doing it.
This has happened to me a ton of times. As a matter of fact, there's another time recently where the same exact thought process occurred for me and I experienced a breakthrough when I finally did it. I realized it wasn't nearly as hard as I thought it was going to be, to actually do it.
My encouragement to you, if there is something that is putting you in a funk. If there's something that you're avoiding doing. If there's something that just know you need to get done, but you've been putting off and procrastinating, maybe just maybe, if you just do a little bit at a time. Literally, minutes at a time and you work on it for minutes at a time in your day, more than likely it's not going to take nearly the amount of time you thought it was going to take to get it done.
Inspirational Bible Verse
There's a scripture that I think about when I'm talking about this, that I wanted to share with you. A scripture that comes out of Isaiah. Isaiah 57:14 says this, "God says, rebuild the road. Clear away the rocks and stones, so my people can return from captivity." Another way to put it is out of the English standard version. "Build up. Prepare the way. Remove every obstruction from my people's way." That's a good verse for us to remember, is that God just wants to remove the obstructions of our lives. A lot of times they're just pebbles. They're just little stones that keep us from traveling along the path that he has for us. Sometimes it's just so simple to go about the business of removing those obstacles. The way to do it is by removing your own feelings. Get out of your own way. Trust that God has a path for you and a plan for you. Just go about the business of doing it. I hope this has been an encouragement to you to just go and do it. Think about the Nike symbol when you're faced with a decision to do something. Share about what happened when you finally went, and did it, and broke through, and accomplished what you needed to accomplish. Big or small, because you did it in bite sized chunks.
